The Blessing of the Boats Bucerias, Mexico

In the small charming coastal town of Bucerias, Mexico, a town with amazing sunsets; there is a sun-soaked shore that comes alive with a colorful celebration of the Blessing of the Boats. This annual event is a lively fiesta that includes church, tradition, community spirit, and plenty of fun with authentic cultural experiences for everyone young to old.

This was my first Blessing of the Boats event and now I am adding this to my must do list every year. The annual event is January 16-24 with the final day concluding with the blessing of the boats. During the 9-day event the town transforms into a lively fiesta, featuring amusement rides, games, music, street vendors & sounds of booms from actual cannons each morning.

My day stared at 11 am to the rhythmics sounds and sights of traditional Mayan dancing, music and a parade that proceeded down the main street in downtown Bucerias to the church; Our Lady of Peace-Senora de La Paz. There was a ceremony at the church that included prayers & blessings for the fisherman & local community.

At noon we headed down to the beach past the massive Bucerias sign where a rainbow of boats decked out with colorful decorations of balloons, flags, and banners started heading in from La Cuz Huanacaxtle.

There was an exciting energy of happy beach crowds cheering as each decorated boat arrives at the shore to receive a ceremonial boat blessing.

The day continues into late night with live music from the Bucerias Plaza, where folkloric dancers, mariachi bands, and cowboys perform. It was heartwarming to see locals, expats and tourists alike join in embracing the festive celebration. I pat myself on the back because I am the brave at heart who fully embraced the event enjoying every bit including the fireworks that took place around 11:15 pm.
